In 2012, Dr. Wenhui Li’s team discovered that NTCP is a functional receptor for hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis D virus (HDV). It is hailed as one of the most significant discoveries in the field of hepatitis B research in 20 years.
NTCP, a bile acid transporter located on the sinusoidal side of liver cells, is responsible for the uptake of bile acid from the portal vein into liver. This pivotal transporter plays a critical role in mediating the enterohepatic cycle of bile acid and its function significantly impacts liver metabolism. Furthermore, NTCP has the potential to influence the hepatic immune environment through bile acid signaling pathways. As a result, NTCP presents itself as a promising target for drug development in the treatment of liver diseases.
As a functional receptor for HBV and HDV, NTCP determines the very first step of virus infection. By blocking the binding of viruses to NTCP, we can effectively inhibit the infection and re-infection of liver cells by the viruses. Targeting NTCP has now become a clinically validated approach in HBV/HDV infection control.

Dr. Li currently serves as our Chairman of the Board. He has over 20 years of experience in viral infection mechanisms and its prevention and treatment research. In 2012, Dr. Li’s team discovered sodium taurocholate co-transporting polypeptide (NTCP), a receptor integral to hepatitis B infection. The discovery was a major breakthrough in the field in the over past 30 years and is now widely considered a milestone in HBV research. Dr. Li was awarded Outstanding Young Scientist in Basic Science Award, “Outstanding Achievement Award” by the WuXi AppTec Life Science and Chemistry Award.
Dr. Li received his PhD. from Peking Union Medical College in 2001. Prior to founding Huahui Health, Dr. Li worked at Harvard Medical School from 2001 to 2007 and joined National Institute of Biological Sciences, Beijing (NIBS) in October 2007.
